Charlie Jackson Sr.
Charlie Jackson, a deacon and member of Mount Olive Baptist Church No.
1, died Saturday at the age of 87.
Jackson, a native of Gainestown, Ala., resided in Mobile. He had worked
as a machine operator.
At church, Jackson served as an auxiliary officer of the Number 1 Usher
Board and an officer of the Floral Club Ministry for 41 years. He was named
Man of the Year in 1991 and 1992, and Senior Citizen of the Year in 1994
and 1995 by Prichard Mayor Jesse Norwood.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie B. Jackson; his children, Charlie
R. Winston of Bessemer, Ala., Bettye R. Kelly of Los Angeles, Louida J.
McCarroll of Prichard and Charlie Jackson Jr. of Mobile; his sisters, Amelia
Ewing of Pensacola, and Sarah Whiley of Detroit; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren;
and two foster grandsons.
Viewing will from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Christian Benevolent Funeral
Home after 5 p.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church No. 1, where visitation
will take place from 6 p.m. until the 7 p.m. services. Interment will take
place at 10 a.m. Monday in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
"Shorty" Baker
SWEET WATER - George Golman "Shorty" Baker, who had worked as a scaler
for the American Can Co., died Thursday in a hospital in Thomasville, Ala.,
He was 78.
A native of Reform, Ala., Baker resided in Sweet Water. He was a member
of Nanafalia Baptist Church.
He was also a veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Baker of Sweet Water; five sons, George
Baker Jr. of Arkadelphia, Ark., Danny M. Baker of Whynot, Miss., Lt. Col.
Claude Phillip Baker of Fayetteville, Ga., Patrick B. Baker of Nanafalia,
Ala., and Gary E. Baker of Northport, Ala.; two brothers, Grover O. Baker
of Graceville, Fla., and H.W. "Boots" Baker of Thomasville; 14 grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Nanafalia Baptist
Church with burial in the church cemetery in Nanafalia. O'Bryant Chapel
Funeral Home of Thomasville is handling arrangements.
"Demps"Allen
"Demps" Allen, a retired school superintendent and former football coach,
died Wednesday in Monroeville after a long battle cancer.
Allen was a native of Vernon, Ala., and resident of Monroeville.
He served as a teacher and head coach at J.U. Blacksher High School
in Uriah, Ala., and Washington County High School in Chatom.
He joined the staff of Monroe County High School in 1958 as a teacher
and head coach and went on to coach five successive Pine Belt Conference
championship football teams. In 1960, the undefeated MCHS football team
was the Birmingham News 2-A Champion and Allen was named Alabama Class
2-A Football Coach of the Year by that newspaper. In 1962, he was selected
to coach in the Alabama All-Star football game.
In 1966, Allen left coaching after becoming principal of MCHS, serving
in that capacity until 1969, when he was appointed coordinator of federal
funds for Monroe County. In April 1970, he accepted a position as supervisor
of local accounting and food service with the state Department of Education
in Montgomery.
He became superintendent of the Monroe County Board of Education in
1972 before being appointed president of Patrick Henry State Junior College
in Monroeville in 1981. He retired in 1989.
Allen was a 1949 graduate of Lamar County High School. He attended Itawamba
Community College in Fulton, Miss., before serving two years in the U.S.
Army. Upon his discharge from military service, he entered Livingston University
on a football scholarship and received his bachelor of science degree in
1954.
He received his master of education degree in school administration
from Auburn University. He also held an AA certificate in school administration
and an educational specialist degree from Livingston University.
During his career, Allen held numerous elected professional offices,
including serving as president of the Alabama High School Athletic Association,
the Alabama Secondary School Principals, the Alabama Association of Junior
and Community College Presidents, and the Alabama Association of Junior
and Community College Athletic Association. He was also the district representative
of the Alabama Association of School Administrators.
He was inducted into the Alabama Lefthander's Hall of Fame in 1979 and
the Livingston University Society of the Golden Key in 1982. In 1984, he
received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the university. In addition,
he was inducted into the Lamar County Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
Allen served as board member and concert chairman of the Monroe County
Community Concert Association; member and director of the Kiwanis Club
International; member of the Monroeville Board of Adjustments; director
of the United Way; and regional development chairman and board member for
the Alabama affiliate of the American Heart Association.
He was Monroeville Citizen of the Year in 1988.
As a member of First Baptist Church of Monroeville, Allen served as
a deacon, taught Sunday school and chaired several church committees.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Richardson Allen of Monroeville; four
children, R. Joseph Allen of Athens, Tenn., Laura A. Buchanan of Hickory,
N.C., Toni A. Stanton of Gulf Shores and Cynthia A. Marbury of Birmingham;
two brothers, Henry Allen of Vernon and Ed Allen of Amory, Miss.; and 10
grandchildren.
Services are set for 10 a.m. today at the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist
Church of Monroeville. Interment will take place in Pineville Cemetery
with Johnson Funeral Home on Monroeville in charge of arrangements.
Pauline B. Johnson
Pauline B. Johnson, a native of Clarke County who resided in Mobile
more than 50 years, died Monday in a local hospital. She was 92.
Survivors include her daughter, Pearlie M. Todd of Mobile; 12 grandchildren;
a numerous great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at St. Paul Church of God Pentecostal, 1383 Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Ave., on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service.
Interment will be in Catholic Cemetery. Christian Benevolent Funeral Home
is handling arrangements.
George L. Bonner
George L. Bonner, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died Saturday
at a local nursing home. He was 78.
He was a retiree of Mobile Gas Co. after 37 years of service.
He is survived by his children, Delores Massey of Prichard, Hannah Wilson
of Eight Mile, Valerie Moore and George Bonner Jr. of Mobile and Fred Bonner
of Chicago; one brother, John G. Bonner of Prichard; and several grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral at Revelation
Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.

Col. Edwin V. Taylor Jr.
RIVERDALE, Ga. - Col. Edwin V. Taylor Jr., who retired from the U.S.
Army after 24 years, died Monday in Fort Gordon, Ga., after a brief illness.
He was 54.
A native of Tuscaloosa, Taylor resided in Riverdale for the last several
years where he was vice president of Technical Laboratory Associates Inc.
Taylor grew up in Mobile and graduated from UMS in 1962. He attended
the University of Alabama.
While in the Army, his assignments included serving with the 20th Special
Forces Group in Birmingham. He also served at the Pentagon in Washington,
D.C.
He was a member of American Legion Post 258 and was serving as chaplain
of the Sons of the American Legion Squad 258. He also had been a member
of Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham.
Survivors include his mother, Mary M. "Pete" Taylor of Mobile; one sister,
Lyn T. Peterson of Mobile; and one son, Edwin Val Taylor of Riverdale.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Government Street
Presbyterian Church in Mobile.
Memorials may be made to Government Street Presbyterian Church or the
American Heart Association.
Pearline Clausell
Pearline Clausell, a native of Lower Peach Tree, Ala., and a resident
of Mobile, died Friday in a local health-care facility. She was 76.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Prince Clausell Sr.; eight
sons, Robert Clausell of Denver, Michael Clausell of Knoxville, Tenn.,
James Clausell and Clarence Clausell, both of Mobile, Charles Clausell,
Prince Clausell Jr., Leroy Robinson and Percy Robinson, all of Flint, Mich.;
her adopted son, Ray Clausell of Mobile; two sisters, Edwina Williams of
Lower Peach Tree and Georgia Timmons of Mobile; one brother, Roosevelt
Davis of Mobile; 27 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at Christian Benevolent
Funeral Home. Visitation will also be after 9 a.m. Friday at Faith City
Cathedral Pentecostal Deliverance Church, 521 Telegraph Road in Prichard,
with visitation from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service. Interment will
be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Vardiman Chambliss
Vardiman Chambliss, a retired draftsman from Brookley Air Force Base
who was a local painter and sculptor, died Sunday in a local hospital at
the age of 84.
Chambliss, a native of Guin, Ala., was a longtime resident of Mobile
and a retiree of the U.S. Navy.
His artwork has been in a number of art shows and exhibits. His works
include a mural on the wall at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 49 in
Mobile. The mural depicts the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima
during World War II.
He had served as a former director of Studio One. He studied art in
Mobile and Florida as well as in Mexico.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Chambliss of Mobile; and one sister,
Omadel Sellers of Gardendale, Ala.
Visitation will be today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens
Funeral Home. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday in
Mobile Memorial Gardens.
Betty Ramey Savage
Betty Ramey Savage, a retired cafeteria worker at Rosa A. Lott Elementary
School, died Monday at a local hospital. She was 59.
Savage, a native of Mobile who lived in Citronelle, attended Memorial
Baptist Church in Citronelle.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond L. Savage of Citronelle; four
sons, Billy Ramey and Allen W. Ramey of Citronelle, Bobby Ramey of Calvert,
Ala., and Joseph W. Ramey of Robertsdale; four daughters, Mary Jane Holland
of Deer Park, Ala., Johnnie Faye Guy of Mobile and Deborah Hosford and
Kimberly Weaver of Citronelle; one brother, Leon Davidson of Vernon, Fla.;
four sisters, Margie Booth, Irma Jarman and Audrey Newburn, all of Citronelle,
and Merline Loper of Four Points, Ala.; and 36 grandchildren.
Visitation will be todayfrom 6 p.m. to 9 .m. at Freeman Funeral Home
in Citronelle. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Baptist
Church. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery in Citronelle.
Barbara Burns
Barbara Burns, a retired employee of J.C. Penney, died Sunday at her
home. She was 64.
Mrs. Burns, a native of Batesville, Miss., lived in Mobile. She had
worked in the retail business for many years before retiring from Penney
as a stockroom supervisor.
Survivors include her husband, Bruce Burns of Mobile; one daughter,
Susan Sime of Mobile; one brother, Aubrey Sanders of Batesville; and one
granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mobile Memorial
Gardens Funeral Home, where services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday.
Interment will take place in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
Rhuey Hill Skidmore
Rhuey Hill Skidmoore, native of Mason County, W.V., and resident of
Mobile, died in a local hospital Sunday. She was 79.
She is survived by a daughter, Kay Aeiker of Mobile; a brother, Donald
Hill of Charleston, W.V.; and one grandson.
Visitation is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at J.E. Johnson Funeral in Charleston,
W.V. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of J.E. Johnson
Funeral Home in Charleston. Interment will be in John Bean Cemetery in

Eliza Jane Howell
ST. STEPHENS - Eliza Jane Howell, a homemaker, died Wednesday at her
home. She was 83.
Mrs. Howell, 83, was a native of Bladon Springs, Ala., and a resident
of St. Stephens. She was a member of James Chapel Baptist Church of St.
Stephens.
Survivors include three sons, James Howell, Sam Howell Jr. and L.C.
Howell, all of St. Stephens.; five daughters, Bosie McIntosh of Cleveland,
Ohio, Clara Perkins of La Punte, Calif., Merrian Banks of Los Angeles,
Etta Sargent of Rialto, Calif., Debra Flannigan of West Covina, Calif.;
two brothers, Willie Mitchell of Mobile and James Mitchell of Moses Lake,
Wash.; four sisters, Lucille Holcombe of Mobile, Martha Wallace, Alfreda
McDonald and Susan Daily, all of Seattle; 38 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren;
and eight great-great grandchildren.
Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. today at James Chapel Baptist Church

Frank Wiley
Frank Wiley, a retired warehouse worker with Budweiser, died Sunday
in a local hospital at the age of 79.
Wiley, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, was a longtime resident of Mobile.
Survivors include his wife, Daisy Wiley of Mobile; one son, Gregory
Wiley of Mobile; one daughter, Essie Hudson of Mobile; one sister, Rosie
Brown of Cleveland; one brother of Cleveland; five grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
The funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home
in Prichard with visitation from 2 p.m. until service time. Interment will
take place in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Fred M. Rester
Fred M. Rester, who worked as a carpenter in the construction business,
died Thursday in a local hospital. He was 63.
Rester was a native and resident of Irvington. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Rester of Irvington; his mother,
Estelle Rester of Irvington; five brothers; and one sister.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Serenity Funeral
Home, where services are set for 10 a.m. Thursday. Interment will take
place in Serenity Memorial Gardens.
Clary May
Clary May, a native of Birmingham and resident of Mobile for a number
of years, died Thursday at her home at the age of 81.
Among her survivors are her adopted children, Annie P. Powe, Lucile
Whitsett, Shirley Mosley and LaVaughn Sylvester.
Visitation will be Wednesday at Ebenezer AME Zion Church from 10 a.m.
until the 11 a.m. services. Interment will take place in Oaklawn Cemetery
with Johnson-Allen Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Joanne M. Johnson
Joanne M. Johnson, a retiree of the Satsuma Police Department, died
Monday in a local hospital.
Mrs. Johnson, a native of Duluth, Minn., resided in Saraland. She had
worked with the Satsuma Police Department for 18 years before retiring
as a dispatcher.
Survivors include her husband, Charles G. Johnson Jr.; five children,
Rhonda Norman of Satsuma, Linda Lund, Kathy Verdugo, Melanie Schmitz and
Chuck Johnson III, all of Saraland; one sister, Darlene Burleson of Chickasaw;
two brothers, Eugene McCoy of Tyler, Texas, and Kim McCoy of Beaumont,
Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a wake service
at 7 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, where the funeral is set
for 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Memorial
Gardens.
John W. English
URIAH - John W. English, a retired pulpwood worker, died Friday in a
Mobile hospital. He was 78.
English was a lifelong resident of Uriah. He was a member of Grove Hill
Baptist Church of Uriah.
Survivors include his wife, Callie English; three daughters, Octavia
Dean of Uriah, Savannah Kelson of Stockton and Rosa Dean of Pensacola;
one sister, Mervia English of Uriah; 16 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grove Hill Baptist Church
with interment in Grove Hill Cemetery. Jones Unity Funeral Home of Monroeville
